The main objective of this initiative is to contribute to the protection of the Mediterranean small islands by setting-up practical measures for conservation management, and by facilitating the exchange of information and experience between the site managers and experts from across the Mediterranean Basin.
CoReGe is the Research and Management Committee of the PIM Initiative that consists in a group of recognized and competent personalities at the international level, gathering key-persons from waterside countries of the Mediterranean Basin (scientists, managers or experts), with a diversity of expertise and thematic. This integration of skills and experiences allows insuring an operational, organizational, technical and scientific relevance for the PIM Initiative missions.
The PIM CoReGe 2013 meeting was held from 19 to 21 November in Aix en Provence, France, with the presence of 45 participants, involving CoReGe members and PIM associated experts from many Mediterranean countries. The aim of the meeting was to discuss about the work in progress under the PIM initiative, the current status of the programs and projects that are under implementation, such as the encyclopedic Atlas of the small islands of the western Mediterranean, the "Sentinel Island" program, the "Albatros" program, as well as the organization of a campaign at sea linking islands to lay the foundations for a global change observation network across the western basin of the Mediterranean through the study of physico-chemical parameters and instrumentation of insular pilot sites.
The Association for Protection of Aquatic Wildlife of Albania (APAWA) has participated in this meeting as a partner organization of the Conservatoire du Littoral and the PIM initiative. APAWA has distributed the NETCET leaflet (English version) to the participants of the meeting and has introduced the NETCET project during the presentation of APAWA’s activities. It was highlighted the importance of integrating and complementing the activities between the PIM initiative and the NETCET project on Sazani island that is involved under the PIM and is also a target area in the Vlora bay, under the NETCET project, as an important area for the bottlenose dolphin in Albania.
