Specialized Training Course on “Cetaceans and Sea Turtles: emergencies, interventions and epidemiology” – Roseto degli Abruzzi (Italy)

Specialized Training Course on “Cetaceans and Sea Turtles: emergencies, interventions and epidemiology” – Roseto degli Abruzzi (Italy)

From the 21st to the 23rd of November 2013a training course on Cetaceans and Sea Turtles will be held in Roseto degli Abruzzi (Italy).

It is an opportunity of considerable scientific relevance considering the increasing awareness on issues related to the conservation of endangered animals such as dolphins, whales and sea turtles. Indeed, in the event of discovery of stranded or dead animals, operational skills are needed and they require professional knowledge and experience, in particular if we consider the specific needs of these animals as well as the health risks they can potentially represent for the community.

For these reasons, all the issues that will be discussed during the training course (regulatory framework, the way of intervention, first aid and rehabilitation in rescue centres and diseases and sanitation standards to be complied with) represent very relevant topics from a scientific point of view. These issues are particularly up to date as the Adriatic Coast is unfortunately experiencing unusual quantity of mortalities of sea turtles in the last month.

During this training, first results and main objectives of the NETCET Project, will be presented in several training sessions. This type of dissemination is important to fulfill one of the main objectives of NETCET which is to increase communities’ awareness of the presence and conservation needs of these species as well as the improvement of scientific knowledge and effective collaboration between the organisations involved in cetaceans and sea turtles conservation in the Adriatic.
